Our B&B near Florence Duomo and Santa Maria degli Angeli

The Frederick IV’s, King of Denmark extraordinary stay in Italy in 1709 had a very romantic origin: to meet again with Maria Maddalena Trenta. They had met in 1692 in Lucca, in a Frederick’s educational journey but the two lovers could not get married, because reasons of state demanded that the king could not marry a Catholic woman. Frederick tied the knot at home and Maria Maddalena locked herself in convent in Florence.

After seventeen years the king returned to visit her. So it was that Frederick, when he became king, wanted to return to Tuscany and revise not only the places of his love but, above all, the never forgotten nun Trenta. Permission was granted to the king for a short interview after a long and persistent requests to the Archbishop of Florence and nobody ever knew what the king and the sister said to each other.

The monastery in question was Camaldolese S. Maria degli Angeli, abolished in 1810. The famous round, today Linguistic branch of University of Florence designed by Brunelleschi. is located in Via degli Alfani, at corner with Piazza Brunelleschi 100 meters away from Black 5 Townhouse Florence.
